Sale of former state hospital to Mohegan Tribe approved

PRESTON, Conn. (AP) — Residents in Preston have unanimously voted to support the Connecticut town’s proposal to sell the site of the former Norwich State Hospital to the Mohegan Tribe.

Tribal Chairman Kevin Brown says he was surprised by the swiftness of the vote at Thursday’s special town meeting.

The Mohegan Tribe is seeking to transform the property along the Thames River into a multi-purpose development that would potentially include a year-round ski slope, an outdoor adventure park, office space and a 55-and-older community.

The tribe will spend between $200 and $600 million to develop the site of the former state psychiatric hospital, which closed in 1996.
