The catastrophic wildfire that has been raging in Alberta for more than two weeks suddenly started moving north late Monday towards major oil sands facilities, forcing the evacuation of around 8,000 people from work camps in the area late last night.
Oil Sands Facilities Threatened
Officials cited by Reuters said Suncor Energy and Syncrude Canada confirmed they had evacuated workers from the impacted region. Their major facilities in the area were under a precautionary notice with the fire about 10-12 miles away. Twelve work camps south of the major projects were under mandatory evacuation notices....
Suncor said in a statement late Monday that it is in the process of transporting personnel from the lodges on Aostra Road and near its base plant facility to other lodges further north. The company said there has been no damage to its assets, and that it has "enhanced fire mitigation and protection around all of its facilities....
Enbridge said in an update that the fire also threatened its Cheecham crude oil tank farm, located south of Fort McMurray. The company said a firebreak around the terminal was being widened and crews were evaluation other fire suppression options:...
By Monday evening the wildfire was moving 98 to 131 feet per minute and had jumped a critical firebreak north of Fort McMurray to push into the oil sand camp regions, Reuters reported....
