Trump launches tax plan rewrite

The GOP front-runner asks influential conservatives to help cut the price of his proposal.

Shane Goldmacher 05/11/16  05:18 AM EDT

 http://www.politico.com/story/2016/05/donald-trump-taxes-tax-reform-223041

Donald Trump’s campaign has enlisted influential conservative economists to revise his tax package and make it more politically palatable by slashing the $10 trillion sticker price. Their main targets: Lifting the top tax rate from Trump’s original plan and expanding the number of people who would have to pay taxes under it.

Trump’s initial proposal, rolled out with fanfare at Trump Tower in Manhattan last September, has been in the spotlight since he became the presumptive Republican nominee last week and promptly declared that it was only a starting point for any negotiations with congressional Democrats, should he become president.

But it turns out Trump’s team is open to revamping it far sooner than that; the campaign last month contacted at least two prominent conservative economists — Larry Kudlow, the CNBC television host, and Stephen Moore of the Heritage Foundation and a longtime Wall Street Journal writer — to spearhead an effort to update the package.

“What we’ve been trying to do is help advise him a little bit to try to reduce the cost of the plan” and still encourage economic growth, Moore said in an interview.

Trump’s initial plan has come under criticism from both the right and left for vastly expanding the deficit, with the nonpartisan Tax Foundation estimating it would add $10 trillion to the federal deficit in the next decade.

Oh, it's a fine thing to watch a candidate negotiating with himself. And letting us know about who the best and brightest are.

But Trump do like him some TV personalities, don't he?

So Dogmatic unchanging managers are successful in your world? In mine we adapt to changing environment and new information while keeping the main objectives in site. Until you can show his goal is NOT to lower taxes the ones arguing hes doing what one does in the real world to obtain the stated goal are being disingenuous.

I guess it follows that if you consult with yourself, you also negotiate with yourself. Trump is in way over his head and watching this incoherence would be amusing if the survival of our Republic wasn't at stake.

Here's how:

"Their main targets: Lifting (raising?) the top tax rate from Trump’s original plan and expanding the number of people who would have to pay taxes under it."

The idea should be to have Americans pay less taxes by reducing the size and scope of the federal Government.

Until a $neverTrump person can show that Trump's goal is NOT to lower taxes all this agitprop ignores the fact in real world one has to negotiate and compromise on lesser things to get the main goal. Really, the position he is supposed to be an Autocrat and wave a wand to get all he wants with no opposition is ludicrous when one thinks about it. All hes doing is letting the opposition know hes willing to negotiate.

Nothing says hes reversing the goal of lowering taxes.

Trump has already indicated he does not want to reduce the size of government.  He is talking about adding new debt and floating a riskier type of bond to fund his expansive plans.

why did you leave out that was in context of the bottom number inside his plan. i.e higher then the 25 percent he was going to try for? Not an increase from what we have now.

Actually he has, look up what he wants to do to the federal regulatory agencies.

Crazy, isn't it?
Why does he want to double down on an already disastrous proposition?

Actually he has, look up what he wants to do to the federal regulatory agencies.

As soon as  he reads what he "wants to do" about that, he'll start those negotiations.

Real world TRUMPs the mocking. I have turned-around businesses. You have goals you will not compromise on and ones that are not as important may be to the other side. You have not shown his goal is anything but lowering taxes. Instead you are arguing the mechanics of how he accomplishes that goal.

Larry Kudlow and Stephen Moore are television personalities.  They are not economists.

Aside from the fact that Trump is renegotiating with himself and his supporters, Kudlow does have some economic chops:

And so does Moore:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lawrence_Kudlow

From Kudlow's....

On June 26, 2002, in a commentary in NRO titled "Taking Back the Market — By Force",[17] Kudlow called for the United States to attack Iraq because "a lack of decisive follow-through in the global war on terrorism is the single biggest problem facing the stock market and the nation today." Kudlow was one of 250 economic experts to sign an open letter dated February 12, 2003 endorsing George W. Bush's policies on economic growth and jobs.[18]

Hmmmmm...
