WSJ's Bret Stephens: Hillary 'Conservative Hope'

This upcoming election will give conservatives a lesson in inverted politics — winning is losing, losing is winning. That is, electing Hillary Clinton president is the best outcome for conservatism in 2016, writes Bret Stephens in The Wall Street Journal.

Trump winning the White House would, Stephens writes, "cripple the conservative cause for a generation." The prevailing notion, he writes, is that there is no evidence Trump would pivot to become a statesman nor an endorser and protector of conservative causes.

Further, electing Clinton, the presumptive Democrat nominee, keeps in play the issue of character and Clinton's actions that show a lack of it. Electing Trump, however, removes conservatives' ability to play the character card.

Losing the general election gives the country four years of another Clinton, but that is not the worse outcome, Stephens says. There will always be elections, and it's the next one which conservatives can take credit for a "healthy restoration" with a true conservative at the helm, just as Carter beget Reagan.

Stephens chalks it up to political hygiene.
