Americans are adopting a foreign policy much closer to Republican Donald Trump than Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton, saying in a new survey that they want an "America First" focus that fixes the U.S. before other countries.

A comprehensive new Pew Research Center poll found that 57 percent agree that America should deal with its own problems. Just 37 percent disagreed. And more than not said America is too helpful internationally.

"The new survey, conducted April 12 to 19 among 2,008 U.S. adults, finds the public remains wary of global involvement," said Pew.

The Republican has pitched his foreign policy as "America First," and wants to review the country's relationship and funding of groups like NATO and the United Nations. He also wants to beef up spending at home, and that could come at the price of fewer tax dollar subsidies of foreign nations.

The public also wants to trim U.S. economic involvement overseas. Pew said:

"The public's wariness toward global engagement extends to U.S. participation in the global economy. Nearly half of Americans (49 percent) say U.S. involvement in the global economy is a bad thing because it lowers wages and costs jobs; fewer (44 percent) see this as a good thing because it provides the U.S. with new markets and opportunities for growth."

Trump recently said that past trade deals, like NAFTA, hurt American workers. Former President Bill Clinton approved NAFTA.

How dare Americans expect to retain (let alone improve) their standards of living. The elites know they should accept declining pay, declining standards of living.

The elites know the status quo should not be challenged, or questioned.

Americans should be joyful, when their jobs are outsourced and they can't pay their bills, to get helpful customer service calls from Philippines and India, to "expedite" payments.

Americans should be joyful, when buying furniture factory made in China, that the environment was not harmed.

Americans should be joyful, that Hillary Clinton and democrats on one side and the Republicans on the other side, both agree with the policies outlined above, lest we create disagreements with trading partners. Both say go along, to get along. Don't upset the established apple cart.

Or take chances. Challenge those who defend the unacceptable status quo.

None of those things are happening because of foreigners or foreign governments. They are happening because of Americans and the American government.

I fully agree. And Mr. Trump is the candidate that brought the subject to the front, and says we should be doing something about it.

Most other candidates, just did their ordinary political double-speak routines, like business as usual.

Like Trump or not, he alone made these issues important. And it got him the most votes. So apparently the issues mean something to the lowly people, you know.

Most of the opposition to Trump is from political professionals, and forum junkies, fearing their cheese is being moved.

And that was of course predictable, since they are effectively "the establishment."

Think 1964, and 1980. The boat got rocked.

America first but you don't get that by electing a person who only puts himself first.

There is nothing Trump can do about bringing jobs back to America.  He's selling a pig in a poke to his gullible followers.

He knows it, you know it, I know it.  They don't know it.

33% of the New GOP seem to think so.  Sad really.

LOL!  There are a hell of a lot of things they can do to bring jobs back to America.  Try lowering the corporate income tax rate for starters.

Yet Scam Wow says he will raise taxes.

And instead of lowering corp taxes.... would impose tariffs...Smoot Hawley reduex.

If you wanted to lower taxes... that was Cruz.  Maybe in 2020 ...after four years of Hillary.. maybe the nutters on our side(s'posedly) will wake up.

No.  Cruz is the one who wants to return the American government to it's constitutional limits.  The corrupt federal government is the problem.  There is too much power and money concentrated in D.C.  Trump has not even correctly identified the problem, but Cruz has.

Trump believes in Trump first, not America first.

Ah, Andy, you're right again.

But... because "those things" are happening "because of Americans and the American government", the American people want a change.

And to a large number of them -- perhaps a surprisingly large number of them (we'll find out in the coming months) -- Donald Trump, like him, despise him, or whatever -- is perceived to be the guy who might actually try to STOP "those things" from "happening".

It's gonna be a heck of a campaign!
