The Four Principles of Trumpaganda

https://medium.com/bad-words/how-to-bully-people-like-donald-trump-66c3d95f039#.p2n1go4mr
Author: Umair Haque
Date: August 2015

What’s the secret behind Trump’s success? After all, the not-so-secret truth is that Trump is a mediocre businessman. But what he is is an expert negotiator. And in his Presidential campaign, Trump is using techniques honed over a lifetime. Of a very specific kind.

Trump is a bully. A classic one. But also, to give the devil his due, a sophisticated one. Let me be clear what that means. Like all bullies, he does not merely prey on his victims: he preys on us to prey on his victims. That is, like all bullies, he manipulates people’s expectations, expertly, to create the illusion that he is destined to win. And that — not leadership nor competition — is how he wins the upper hand.
...
Redefine legitimacy. Trump begins with a simple technique: calling his opponents “failures” and “losers”. What is Trump trying to do? To create the perception that since his opponents have failed in some regard, they are “losers” generally: that they will fail in every regard. They simply do not possess the character or competence to get the job done (whether it’s constructing a building or being President). That perception of failure is the foundation on which all bullying is built — it lets the bully then portray the victim not just as someone they claim is weak — but as someone that is generally believed to be weak.
...
Intimidate your opponents. Wait…who “proved” the bully is strong and capable? Trump calls his opponents “failures” and “losers” for a strategic reason. Not merely because they are (or not, which is besides the point). But to create the perception that everyone else already believes that they are. That is not merely debate, or enmity — but intimidation. Intimidation creates a self-fulfilling prophecy of weakness.
...

I think this article nailed several of Trump's techniques.  I found it with a search for Trumpaganda.

There has to be a psychological aspect in determining who is susceptible to these tactics.  Scott Adams had some interesting thoughts on this as well.

I find it interesting that a lot of Texans in general know the legitimacy of Cruz's record and see through these attacks in higher numbers.

Anyway, please post your thoughts.

(and please excuse the Clockwork Orange graphic at the article site if you are easily offended)

Knight also liked Trump because he wasn't a real republican and he felt that he would make a great president because he had the mentality to save BILLYUNS of Americans by dropping a bomb.

I'm not disputing Truman's decision, but I found the selective perception (even with Trump's Iraq position) and what was important to the chair-thrower interesting.

Very good article and very prescient.  This was written last August and I can imagine the author is dumbfounded that Trump has succeeded, but he has.  And he has by using the methods of a bully.

I especially liked this:

Quote
Thus, truth-telling critics are the bully’s true enemy — not the opponent. For they and they alone hold the power to defeat the bully’s clever tactics of metainfluence. And so it’s vital for those critics to be not just ignored, nor rebutted, nor, worst of all, appeased — but silenced and deterred, diminished to invisibility.

That is why Trump, unlike most political candidates, does not merely answer his critics with policy proposals — but instead quickly, and usually viciously, leaps to discredit them. The critic is portrayed as not just unreasonable, or wrong, or mistaken — but also a “loser” or a “failure”. In a different league than the contender entirely.

Trump's supporters act this way too. You are very familiar with that, having come from a site that literally drove you away because you dared tell the truth about Trump.  It's happened here, too, though to a much lesser extent because there are so few Trump followers.

Notice, Trump never takes on anybody about policy, because he can't.  He's too ignorant of policy and knows he'd get slammed.  So he attacks with ad hominems and bullying words.

Quote
Metainfluence can take you only so far. It’s like walking a tightrope. Scratch that. It’s like pointing to a tightrope stretched over a canyon, and then telling the crowd that everyone knows you can walk it the fastest. Maybe, just maybe, the crowd believes you. But suddenly, from the back, a catcall rises, and catches fire. The simple pitfall for metainfluence is this: he whom the mob crowns the mob can just as quickly jeer, scorn, and shun.

Unfortunately, the majority of Trump supporters are too invested in him at this point to risk losing face by turning away.  So, they'll march off the edge of the cliff with him. And, he will ridicule them, call them losers,  if they dare question why he didn't build that
wall or impose those tariffs.

Trump is dangerous.  We cannot support him, for any reason.  The SC is not worth risking the destruction of this country by entrusting governance to this total fool.

The disappointing thing to me as that his supporters won't even require to commit to a position on so many things.  He's still all over the place on many issues.

I'm not quite to the point of writing him off completely, but there are many warning signs.

Read every post and everyone is spot on, which makes it impossible to understand the Trump followers.  The Creepathon meter at $39K and is stuck on stupid as the Trump supporters are.

Now is the time for CRUZ to come out with a DAISY AD.  Using Trumps own words.
1. Nuclear power
2. transgender in bathrooms
3. mother who abort should be punished
4. Women in the Draft
5. (others I missed?)

This AD should be produced NOW, with that Nuclear Bomb going off once again, worked for LBJ.........

Make it Tank Shooting the guns:  no voices, just loud Booms
FIRE#1..........Boom (in the smoke is the statement)
FIRE#2..........Boom   (ditto)
FIRE #3 #4 #5  etc.,etc.,etc.
Last one should be regarding the Nuclear or women in the draft.  Yes I know, you would need a plane for the Nuclear one, so improvise. ^-^

OK, OK, I repent.   :silly:

Thanks for posting this very profound statement, I have been looking everywhere for it.  So much to ponder in what he said, just have to figure out where to start.  Will try reading from the end and go backwards.  **nononono*   Still don't work.

Can anyone in their right mind think trump will is able to be  cognitive with other world leaders?   If ever  there was a poster child for the Peter Principle it is Trump.

those are good ones......firing them off rapid fire with a very loud BOOM.  It would hopefully be enough to scare enough voters to change their minds.     Sadly it worked for LBJ.

That is the true tragedy of the bully. Not merely that they prey on their victims. Nor merely that they prey on us to prey on their victims. But that in creating social ecologies of predator and prey, they diminish and reduce us, to stunted caricatures of our better selves.

This is the gist of it.  Using Freudian terminology, Trump is cotton candy for the id.  He appeals to the reptile brain and its instinct toward aggression, by using the simplest possible language and appealing to the basest of our inclinations.  Trump browbeats the super-ego into submission through intimidation and threats.  For those of us who have spent our lifetimes trying to elevate the civilization through education, it is disheartening to see.

Trump's success is a direct result of the massive dumbing-down of our society, and its burgeoning and predictable requisite need for a tyrant.

“No people will tamely surrender their Liberties, nor can any be easily subdued, when knowledge is diffused and Virtue is preserved. On the Contrary, when People are universally ignorant, and debauched in their Manners, they will sink under their own weight without the Aid of foreign Invaders. “

Samuel Adams, letter to James Warren, November 4, 1775

A good form of government may hold the rotten materials together for some time, but beyond a certain pitch, even the best constitution will be ineffectual, and slavery must ensue.”

I liked both of these quotes, Earl, but the second one struck me as particularly prescient because I think the society has become slothful, lazy and undisciplined.

Trump is far more schooled in the socialist Saul Alninski's 12 Rules for Radicals, spelled out in his book Rules for Radicals than Obama ever was. Obama is familiar the book, but in comparison to Trump he is still in first grade, where Trump has graduated with a doctorate in comparison.

"what the hell do I know about issues"

Pretty much not only sums up Trump and some of his supporters but a significant number of Americans on the left and the right as well. Being informed takes work and far to many of our fellow citizens are just to damn lazy to bother.

WOW!  They were very wise men.  Here we are in 2016, that "rotten materials" trying to be held together by a great Constitution which too many of the people hate and to many others do not understand.

Exactly so! Sad but true!

Boy, you Cruzers sure are smart!  That's why you're WINNING!......oh....wait....

Keep it up with your insults and your breathtaking tone-deafedness - it just makes Trump go higher and higher!  Woo-Hoo!!!

Pretty soon - he'll have enough numbers to go to the convention and win on the first ballot.  We don't need no stinkin' second ballots!!

Cruz is crashing - watch him while you can - you might not get too many more chances to see him before he and Glenn Beck go off together for a much needed "rest".  Someplace with lots of Cheetos and someone will always help pick you up when you fall.....a happy place!

Make comments about my intelligence all y'all want to - because I'm a Trump supporter - but, at least I know how to pick a winner!
