NYT: Trump Victory in Indiana Not Necessary

After Donald Trump swept the five primaries this week, winning Indiana does not seem as important for the real estate mogul to capture the Republican presidential nomination.

A New York Times article spells out Trump's chances of winning this summer's GOP convention, which don't necessarily include taking Indiana — once believed to be decisive in the campaign.

The Times highlights Trump's performance in Pennsylvania on Tuesday. It appears he might have the support of as many as 40 of the state's 54 unbound delegates. Those delegate votes could, therefore, help him win the presidential nomination on the first ballot at the convention this summer.

Indiana has 57 delegate votes up for grabs in its primary scheduled for next Tuesday. The California primary, slated for June 7, has 172.

Trump needs 1,237 delegate votes to secure the nomination, and earning votes in the Indiana and California primaries would help him get there. Winning Indiana outright, however, might no longer be necessary.

Indiana Gov. Mike Pence will reportedly endorse Trump's rival Ted Cruz in the presidential race, which may give the Texas senator a boost in votes next week. Legendary Indiana basketball coach Bobby Knight is on Trump's side and campaigned for him this week.
