Bill Clinton: Dems win Senate with Hillary

Bill Clinton on Monday said Democrats will win Senate control if his wife is the party's presidential nominee.

“Last November, the Democrats lost the Senate,” he said during a campaign rally in Hartford, Conn. "I think they’ll get it back if you vote for Hillary.”

Democrats need to net five seats to take back the majority, or four if they hold on to the White House. Republicans gained control of the chamber in 2014.

The party that wins the presidential race often also sees gains in the House and Senate.

Bill Clinton made the remarks a night before Tuesday’s Democratic presidential primary in Connecticut and four other Northeastern states.

Clinton leads rival Bernie Sanders by nearly 6 points there in the latest RealClearPolitics average of polls. Her lead smaller nationally, however, with the Vermont senator trailing the former first lady by approximately 4 points.

Bill Clinton also said Hillary Clinton is the only presidential candidate capable of handling the scourge of opioid abuse.

“If you want to beat the drug problem back, you have to give people something to look forward to when they wake up in the morning,” he said.

"You have to do that with economics,” the former president added. "That’s why [Hillary Clinton] believes that we have to tackle this national epidemic of prescription drugs and heroin abuse that is eating the heart out of America.

“She has the best ideas to increase employment, increase incomes in good paying jobs and to increase equality. She understands that if we don’t tear down the economic barriers that keep some people from competing, we can’t rise together.”

He said that Hillary Clinton is also best suited for continuing America’s financial resurgence after the 2008 economic collapse.

“The thing that you have to understand is that this whole election — from the primary to the general — comes down to whether you believe we can restore broad base prosperity,” he said. "If you believe that, she’s your candidate.

“More than any other candidate, they say her numbers add up,” he said. "She’s the best change maker I ever saw. If you really want to get something done, you better make Hillary the next president.”
