Seized cartel assets total 223mn pesos
Houses, cars, aircraft and swans were among items belonging to Sinaloa Cartel

Mexico News Daily | Friday, April 8, 2016

Forty-four houses, 10 ranches, 115 vehicles, 13 airplanes and even half a dozen swans were among assets belonging to the Sinaloa Cartel that have been seized by federal authorities in the past two years.

The value of the property seized came to more than 223 million pesos, or US $12.5 million, according to a report today by Reforma.

Most of the assets were found in Culiacán, Badiraguato, Los Mochis, Navolato, La Cruz and Mazatlán in the cartel’s home state, Sinaloa. But others — mostly real estate — were located in the State of México, Puebla, Durango, Jalisco and Veracruz.

Vehicles included half a dozen Mercedes Benz, including a 2006 McLaren, a Dodge Charger painted to look like a municipal police patrol car and even an excavator.

Among the cartel’s many houses were seven in the Sinaloa capital of Culiacán, several of which were connected by a network of tunnels that linked up to the city’s drainage system. They were designed to provide an escape route for cartel boss Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán during the time he was on the run.

Most expensive of the houses was that at 1943 Avenida Los Sauces in the La Campiña neighborhood of Culiacán. Its value was given as 18.9 million pesos.

Other assets seized were six horses, some expensive watches, 15 exotic birds (not including the six swans), and more than 4 million pesos in cash and on deposit in 39 different bank accounts.
