HuffPost: Charles Koch Says Paul Ryan a 'Shoo-In' for GOP's Nomination
Monday, April 4, 2016 04:17 PM

By: Jason Devaney

Billionaire Charles Koch thinks House Speaker Paul Ryan would be a "shoo-in" to serve as the Republican Party's presidential nominee if this summer's convention is contested, according to a report.

The Huffington Post reports Koch has told friends if Donald Trump comes up at least 100 delegate votes short of the 1,237 minimum to secure the nomination, Ryan would be a solid choice.

A source told the Post the Koch brothers support the agenda Ryan is chasing as House speaker, a position he took over last October after John Boehner retired.

The general counsel for Koch Industries, however, told the Post the report was "completely false."

"Let me be clear, we never have advocated for a specific candidate in a presidential primary, and we have no plans to do so now," Mark Holden said.

Top Republicans are predicting that Ryan will be on the November ballot as the party's presidential nominee. A source told Politico Ryan is the ideal choice for the GOP.

"He's the most conservative, least establishment member of the establishment," the source said. "That's what you need to be."

Ryan, on the other hand, is trying to squash the presidential rumors that are suddenly swirling around him.

"People put my name in this thing, I said, 'Get my name out of that,'" Ryan told Hugh Hewitt on his radio program Monday.

Fox News political commentator Juan Williams argued in a commentary for The Hill that Ryan and Trump will duke it out for the party's presidential pick at the Cleveland convention this summer. But that can only happen if Trump fails to shore up the nomination beforehand.

For what it's worth, Boehner said last month he would support a Ryan presidential bid.

"If we don't have a nominee who can win on the first ballot, I'm for none of the above," Boehner said. "They all had a chance to win. None of them won. So I'm for none of the above. I'm for Paul Ryan to be our nominee."

I question the source.  If true, Charles Koch is remarkably out of touch with the broad Republican electorate.

No more so than the GOPers.

I am unclear as to what you mean.  Are you saying GOPers are out of touch with themselves?  Or did you mean to say "no more so than the rest of the establishment (GOPe)?  If so, then that is a bit tricky.  We can't write off everyone, even those who have made mistakes by following the powerful instead of conservative principles and voter promises.  The choices are to either completely self destruct OR (better, IMO) to blame the leadership and try to reclaim the errant followers.

The GOPers don't care about us, the average US worker, taxpayer and voter. They serve up platitudes and milquetoast candidates.  We say enough! You've done nothing for decades. We want America to be great again and one candidate has expressed it with enthusiasm and energy.

The Huffington Post is a reliable source for something the Koch brothers might have said?  Right.  One might as well have asked the Soviets for advice on whether Carter or Reagan would be elected in 1980.

It is never a good idea to making sweeping judgements about whole categories of people.

Yet the anti-Trumps do it to all who even have an inclination to support Trump.

You have to look at why the unit is failing so miserably without condemning the good parts

What are the good parts?

Your plan is to destroy the entire thing.

Making America great again is  destroying the entire thing?

No way do I think Donald is any part of a good answer

Well you and your ilk haven't prrovided a viable alternative. I'm willing to take a chance on a Trump team. I trust he and his administration will put the interests of America and her citizens first and foremost. Trump has more at stake than any other candidate.
