Move over, Judge Judy. There could be a new TV courtroom judge coming to town – and it's none other than former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin.

The onetime vice presidential candidate has been tapped to preside over a planned reality court show that would premiere next year, if it gets picked up by stations. She signed a deal in February with Montana-based production company Warm Springs, a source close to the process tells PEOPLE.

"It's a production deal," the source explains. "What happens next is she'll meet with stations, make a pilot and sell it."

Warm Springs first approached Palin with the idea in 2015 and has since put together a team that includes the TV executive who found Judge Judy and Judge Joe Brown.

Unlike the two famous TV judges, Palin does not have a juris doctor degree. But the source notes that the bestselling author has a variety of other qualities that make her perfectly suited to the job.

"Palin's telegenic personality, wide appeal and common sense wisdom make her a natural for this kind of format and she was Warm Springs' top pick for this project."

I miss the days when politicians would gracefully disappear into the woodwork after their careers are over. Do we really need another judge show especially from a person with zero legal training?

But without the law degree

Sarah Palin may soon be coming to daytime television.

The former vice presidential candidate who we couldn’t stop watching when she ran with Republican John McCain in 2008 has recently signed a production deal to be a television judge on a reality courtroom show, People reports. Palin, former governor of Alaska and a best-selling author, is working on the project with the Montana-based production company Warm Springs.

The company approached her about it in 2015, and since then it has assembled a team to work on the show, including the television executive that is credited with discovering Judith Sheindlin, more commonly known as Judge Judy, and Judge Joe Brown. A source close to the project tells People that Palin signed the deal in February and now “she’ll meet with stations, make a pilot and sell it.” If it’s sold, it will air nationwide as a syndicated daytime television show by the fall of 2017.

In case anyone doesn't know, one doesn't have to be a judge or even a lawyer to preside over one of these shows. It's all just binding arbitration: two parties agree to drop their lawsuit and have their case settled on TV. Usually, it means the offending party doesn't have to pay (as the judgment would come out of their appearance fee).

TV stations love court shows because they're cheap and enough people watch for the tacky drama, even if the judge is a no-name, to make it worth producing them. Hence why you see a dozen of them on the air these days.

If one of the mid-ranking shows gets canceled this season, I would give "Judge" Sarah Palin a good chance of getting picked up.
