Police are now checking the vehicle for more explosives and urge people to stay inside and close their windows, according to Sky News.

Police suspect a bomb caused an explosion that killed a man driving a car during rush hour traffic in central Berlin.

The blast happened in the western district of Charlottenburg about 8am local time.

"The explosion occurred inside or on the vehicle," said Carsten Mueller, deputy chief spokesman for Berlin police.

"Our investigators are working on the assumption that it was an explosive device that caused this."

Police posted an image on Twitter of the wreckage of a silver VW Passat on the street.

Its windows were blown out and front end smashed in.

The scene was sealed off while experts checked the vehicle for more explosives.People were told to close their windows and stay off their balconies.

Detectives were still trying to determine the dead man's identity, Mr Mueller said.
