The other side of that is that both a leader and a religion can be very good things - Most of the incredible advancements in the history of Man could not have been possible without both. And neither necessarily requires a need to to be guided, nor the inability to think independently. In fact, those great leaps often occurred when free thinking individuals found common ground and a leader worthy of the task at hand.
There is no shame in following - the shame is in following blindly.
Even so, there are basic rules, whether those be pulled from Biblical sources or otherwise. Rules against stealing, murder, and others which prevent or at least inhibit social strife and breakdown may vary, but the basics are present in most religions. Where the logic comes in, and can become evil easily is in defining who (or what, exactly) is human. Millions have died because some humans have been considered (quite logically) a clump of cells, even though given time there would be no debate. Others, for whatever quirk of definition that excluded them from the popular definition of humanity, have met the same fate.
Some moral compass, some sense of right and wrong is needed.
