Generally a baby's first word is "Mom". And, interestingly enough, of the people that I have eased out of this life it was their last word.

My observations agree with yours. "Ma"or something on that order is usually first. "Mom" or "Mother" often last.

Believe it or not, my freakin crazy brain looked it up for some reason. In most languages all over the Earth the "mother" word begins with the vocalization of what the English denote as 'M'. Something about the way infants begin to utter. 'M' seems to be instinctive.
