I read a Civil War book of normal peoples observations during and following the civil war.
They are a series of accounts but do include some in military and government from both
sides.
I sent a copy to my grandson who is 11.
It would certainly be an interesting account.A Civil War Treasury of Tales, Legends & Folkloreby B.A. BotkinIt had a two or so page account of the former slave and his freedom passage. He received payment for the stolen barge, evaded the enemy, and delivered many blacks to freedom.
