N Korea faces Toughest Sanctions in 20 Years from UN

BREAKING NEWS – In the midst of growing tensions on the Korean Peninsula, today the U.N. Security Council finally agreed to new sanctions on the rogue government of the north and unanimously approved the toughest sanctions on North Korea in two decades. The move by the member nations reflects the growing anger at Pyongyang’s latest nuclear test and rocket launch in defiance of a ban on all nuclear-related activity.

The new vote is the result of almost seven weeks of give and take between the United States and North Korea’s only real ally and major trading partner, China, who have been trying to hammer out the new sanctions. They include mandatory inspections of cargo leaving and entering North Korea by sea or air, something that China has long balked at in the past, a ban on all sales or transfers of small arms and light weapons to Pyongyang, and expulsion of diplomats from the North who engage in “illicit activities,” such as trying to purchase banned items on the black markets of the Middle East and Europe.

If new N Korea sanctions don’t work, the U.S. warned that the UN could soon face hostilities with the rogue nation

The U.S. and its Western allies working in conjunction with Japan pressed for the new sanctions that went beyond the North’s nuclear and missile programs. But the North’s biggest supporter, China, was reluctant to pass any sanctions that could destabilize the economy of Pyongyang and result in the collapse of the military dictatorship. China said that should the government collapse, it would create another refugee situation that the world was not ready to deal with. But that warning was more a worry on the part of China that should the government fall apart, her border with North Korea would be flooded with refugees seeking aid, which would only make the situation in China that much worse.
