GOP ex-national security officials: Say no to Trump

By David Wright and Eugene Scott, CNN

Updated 11:09 AM ET, Thu March 3, 2016

(CNN)A group of leaders in the Republican foreign policy and national security community wrote an open letter condemning Donald Trump and pledging to oppose his presidential candidacy.

"We are unable to support a Party ticket with Mr. Trump at its head," they wrote in the letter, first posted Wednesday night on the website warontherocks.com.

Trump dismissed the letter -- as well as comments by former director of the National Security Agency Michael Hayden who said if Trump ordered torture, the military would disobey him.

"I'm a leader. I don't think that would happen. They're cutting off heads in the Middle East. They're chopping off people's heads in the Middle East and we're afraid to waterboard," the Republican front-runner said Thursday on ABC's "Good Morning America." "Give me a break. Gen. Douglas MacArthur and Gen. Patton are in their graves right now spinning in their graves. They don't believe what they're seeing."

The authors of the strongly worded letter include Michael Chertoff, the second director of Homeland Security under George W. Bush; Robert Kagan, a leader of the neoconservative movement and a member of the Council on Foreign Relations; Eric Edelman, former Under Secretary of Defense Policy during the Bush 41 administration and U.S. Ambassador to Turkey; and dozens of other former Republican presidential administration officials and conservative think tank members.

The letter was organized by Dr. Eliot A. Cohen, a counselor of the State Department from 2007-2008, and Bryan McGrath, the managing director of a defense consultancy.

"We have disagreed with one another on many issues...but we are united in our opposition to a Donald Trump presidency," they wrote in the letter, listing a series of Trump's positions they described as "core objections."

"His vision of of American influence and power in the world is wildly inconsistent and unmoored in principle," the signees wrote. "He swings from isolationism to military adventurism within the space of one sentence."

They also criticized Trump's controversial call for a temporary ban on Muslim entry into the U.S.

"His hateful, anti-Muslim rhetoric undercuts the seriousness of combating Islamic radicalism by alienating partners in the Islamic world making significant contributions to the effort. Furthermore, it endangers the safety and Constitutionally guaranteed freedoms of American Muslims," they wrote.

And the authors struck at the core of Trump's presidential pitch, dismissing his business experience.

"His equation of business acumen with foreign policy experience is false. Not all lethal conflicts can be resolved as a real estate deal might, and there is no recourse to bankruptcy court in international affairs," they wrote.

Additionally, they blasted Trump's "embrace of the expansive use of torture," charged him with "inflam(ing) unhelpful passions" in the immigration debate, and accused him of holding "the sentiment of a racketeer" regarding the U.S.'s relationship with its military allies.

The signees close the letter, "As committed and loyal Republicans, we are unable to support a party ticket with Mr. Trump at its head. We commit ourselves to working energetically to prevent the election of someone so utterly unfitted to the office."

The searing letter from the members of the conservative foreign policy establishment comes amid a frantic effort by some Republican Party leaders to deny Trump the GOP presidential nomination, after Trump's sweeping victories in the Super Tuesday contests this week bought him closer to securing the nod.

If Trump ordered the murder of Democrats, I assume the military would disobey that as well.

If my aunt had balls, she'd be my uncle.

"If" represents nothing substantive, which basically sums up the board activity of original poster of this thread.

Open borders and unfettered Muslim "refugee" immigration is now the position of the GOoPers, and apparently Trump wanting to limit both is an extreme position on national security.

Geeze, I beginning to wonder if we're also witnessing the end of the "conservative" movement right along with the GOPe.

I guess we really do live in interesting times.

No child, me and mine are the ones who go to these god forsaken 3rd world hell holes and bleed and die so that you and yours can sit in DC making money off it.

Unlike you, I know the reality behind all this bombastic DC rhetoric. Libya and Syria are just two examples of the idiotic notions of the "Defense Contractors for Perpetual War" caucus.

We're doing next to nothing in Syria and nothing in Libya.

How is that "perpetual war"?

You are far too engaged in your frantic daily obsessed gattling gun posting, to read those here today that are NOT Trump supporters, but repulsed by Romney's gambit today.

I will let them speak for themselves.

Rick Perry gave the almost exact speech in October, and nobody cared.

You should be repulsed by Trump's vulgarities, but you're not.

Rick Perry is a non-factor in the GOPe.  Hell Rove and the Bush fami,y tried to primary him in Texas not too long ago because they couldn't control him.

On the other hand,  Milquetoast Milt begged for Trump's endorsement in 2012 and now says the most vile things about him today.

It ain't Trump who changed...

Then you should pay closer attention to your home state because in 2010 Rove/Bush ran Krony Kay Bailey against Perry in the GOP primary.

Career bureaucrats, that haven't won a major war since WWII. Great job guys.

They mainly represent the military-industrial component warned by Eisenhower, btw.

If you do not grasp the connections with the establishment, you ain't paying attention, or have learned nothing.

LOL! No, Kay Bailey ran on her own and even she knew it was futile. She got killed.   Some goofy libertarian ran against him that same year.

Given that Trump sought three deferments from the draft in the 60s because of bone spurs in his heels that mysteriously disappeared after the Vietnam war ended, I'll take the word of generals over a draft dodger.

The feud further escalated when Rove and many other top Bush advisers went to work for U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison in her fierce battle against Perry for the 2010 gubernatorial nomination. Bush's father even endorsed her.

Despite the political firepower behind Hutchison, Perry trounced her and cruised to his second re-election.

You are saying we actually have fought wars since WWII?

The last time the United States declared war *WAS* WWII.

Not even 9/11 got a declaration of war.

"......we actually have fought wars ..."

Tell that to the families of the dead Americans that served in the Korean War, The Vietnam War, the War of Terror, as they are called.
