Donald Trump Reveals Details of His Health Care Plan

Donald Trump released his health care plan Wednesday evening, finally detailing the way in which he would fulfill his campaign trail promise to repeal and replace Obamacare.

In a seven-point plan posted to his website and publicized by a tweet, Trump says he will do away with the individual health insurance mandate, as well as allow competition over states lines for health care plans, and block grant Medicaid to the states, allowing them to follow through on his prescription to "eliminate fraud, waste and abuse to preserve our precious resources."

The third bullet point goes on to say that "we must make sure no one slips through the cracks simply because they cannot afford insurance" and that "we must review basic options for Medicaid and work with states to ensure that those who want healthcare coverage can have it."

How is this any different from what we have now?

Medicaid covers people who cannot afford health insurance, and it's already a state program.  It appears that Trump wants to expand Medicaid in every state (states get to choose now and many states like Texas and Florida refuse to because of costs down the line).  The block grant approach means that states would figure out how to cover people.

Without the individual mandate, how does Trump propose to cover pre-existing conditions?  No mandate means that individuals could simply wait until they get sick and purchase insurance while laying on their backs in a hospital bed and insurance companies would have to cover.

There will be few insurance companies willing to do that (none that I can think of), so the health insurance business would shrink dramatically.

Maybe this is what Trump wants, as he's always favored a single payer option anyway.

States have always controlled health insurance.  Reverse federalism is not conservative, plus there's little evidence that federal regulation of health insurance companies would save any money.

4.  Allow individuals to use Health Savings Accounts (HSAs)--tax free and allowed to accumulate.

5.  Require price transparency from health care providers to allow people to shop for the best price.

6.  Block-grant Medicaid to the states with incentives to seek out and eliminate fraud, waste and abuse of precious resources.

7.  Remove barriers to entry into free markets for drug providers.  Congress will need the courage to step away from special interest groups.

Sounds like a plan that could make practice fun again for me. It's been dreadful under Obamacare. I thought of quitting many times, but I'm still too young to give up. Go Trump!

Require price transparency from health care providers to allow people to shop for the best price.

This is already available in the Obamacare exchanges.  You can go out and do this right now.

There is no barrier to entry in the US  for drug providers.  What there is is price regulation on drug prices in every other country.  We as a country have to decide if, in return for tethered regulation (that is, tying our drug prices to a percentage of prices in a basket of other countries), we are willing to reduce the R&D budgets of pharma companies, thus compromising the introduction of new medicines.

Johnnie, your accusation is baffling.  Do you not see the fairly detailed discussion of Trump's plan, right above your comment?  Come on, isn't this getting old?  The Vast Rightwing Establishment thingie?

I admire your efforts GAJohnnie!  I came here to hopefully have a give and take discussion with people on Trump's plan - but I see mostly knee-jerk stuff that nothing Trump says or does will ever be right, or at least trying to be right, or some sounds pretty good, but it's not perfect, or at least he's come out with a plan in writing.....

It would be quite different if it were Cruz or Rubio's plans - but I never see these people post anything like that here.  It's like they don't even care what the other candidate's positions and plans are - at all.  Never a mention. 

Just anti-Trump, all anti-Trump, anti-Trump, anti-Trump, anti-Trump....   

It's old, repetitive, boring and I mostly just avoid the anti-Trump threads and posters now - already know what they're going to say.
