Sheriff's deputy killed by 'Occupy' member
2 others injured in shootout as officers served eviction notice
Published: 6 hours ago

A sheriff’s deputy in Colorado was shot and killed while trying to serve an eviction notice to a 58-year-old man who was believed to have been an active and vocal member of the Occupy Denver movement.

Corporal Nate Carrigan, who had served on the Park County Sheriff’s force for 13 years, was one of three officers serving the notice to Martin Wirth at his Bailey home, when they were fired upon, the Washington Post reported. Carrigan was killed and in the ensuing shootout, so was Wirth. Master patrol deputy Kolby Martin was shot “multiple times” and air-lifted to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries, authorities said. Capt. Mark Hancock was shot in the ear and taken by ambulance to the same hospital.

The Washington Post reported Wirth met the officers on the front porch then went back inside. After officers followed him in the house, Wirth turned and shot at them, the sheriff’s office said in a statement reported by the newspaper.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Corporal Carrigan’s family and friends at this time,” the Park County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.

The Denver Post reported Wirth was known for his vocal opposition to corporate America and he maintained an active online presence, where he posted scathing messages against criminal justice, the foreclosure situation in the country and other political topics.

He was seen as a leader in the Occupy Denver movement, the newspaper said.

And in a statement posted on Facebook. Occupy Denver members said: “We have just received the tragic news that Martin Wirth, who was known to many in Occupy Denver, was killed by police today as they tried to evict him from his home. He cared deeply about injustice in this world … This is a shock and a tragedy. Rest in power, Martin, you will be missed.”

Wirth reportedly had several run-ins with police over the years, including one incident in 1994 when he was arrested in the shooting death of a man named Vernie Samuel Cox III. Wirth reportedly was playing chess with Cox when a confrontation ensued and he shot him. Wirth was aquitted, saying the shooting was self-defense because Cox grabbed a gun first.
