Copenhagen mayor wants immigrants to go undercover

In a time with raised terror threat and the police being overwhelmed with - yes it has to be said - crimes committed by immigrants, mainly Muslims, Copenhagen Mayor, Anna Mee Allerslev, wants to use desperately needed resources for something completely different.

She doesn't need undercover officers with immigrant backgrounds to infiltrate and uncover terrorist plans, she instead wants to put them in discotheques and bars. No, not to combat groping and sexual assaults.

- Discrimination against young immigrant people in Copenhagen's nightlife is such a big problem that new, tougher methods must be taken into use, says Integration Mayor (actual title) Anna Mee Allerslev (R), which among other things proposes that young people with different ethnic backgrounds to be trained to go undercover to reveal discrimination of immigrants.

- Discrimination in Copenhagen's nightlife is still a major problem, and we can see that it unfortunately thrive, and works against our integration policy, she says to Ritzau.

According to Politiken, the police has from January 1, 2014, until now received a total of 19 reports of discrimination against immigrants.

And that is 19 too many, says Anne Mee Allerslev.

- We as a city can not be familiar with this, as anyone with eyes in the head can see that there is a problem. We have tried various other methods, but nothing seems to help, says the integration mayor.

The trade association DRC, Denmark Restaurants and Cafes, recognizes that there is a problem, but the association is skeptical to the method of going undercover, according to Politiken.

- I am concerned that we may end up in a situation where tests will be staged and not a fair representation. And also I think this gives a suspicion to the whole industry, says the director of DRC Torben Rosenstock.

But Anne Mee Allerslev, believes that the method "generally seems sober".

She refers to Oslo, where she claims the city successfully has used the same model.

- Of course we can discuss how we can best get an end to this (discrimination), but I think we should try what they have done in Oslo, she says.

Maria Lissberg, lawyer and equal treatment director at the Institute for Human Rights, says to Politiken that it is not illegal to use undercover methods.

It has not been possible to get a comment from Claus Oxfeldt, chairman of the Danish Police Union, writes Ekstra Bladet.

Thousands of crimes committed by immigrants have been reported to the police in the same periode as the 19 discrimination reports, but the Danish police, as the Swedish, has found it safest to keep it from the public. Quite understandable as it only shows that the police always shows up AFTER the crimes have been committed, and many times that is simply a bit late for the victims.

If the police show up at all of course. Overwhelmed.

And that is why vigilante groups now form across Scandinavia and the rest of Europe.

Being a bit more discriminating, in so many ways, might help with their rampant violent crime problem.
