7 Reasons Donald Trump Can Still Win
« on: February 04, 2016, 06:53:54 pm »
Donald Trump suffered a stinging defeat by Ted Cruz in the Iowa caucus on Monday, and now heads to New Hampshire.

Many election forecasters like FiveThirtyEight have said that Trump's "round-the-clock media coverage" led to inflated poll numbers, and that Iowa may have represented a bursting of the Trump "bubble."

Trump and his supporters, on the other hand, point out that the candidate did not prioritize Iowa, as he always knew his strongest base of support in the early state primaries would be New Hampshire.

Gathered below are seven reasons Donald Trump can still win New Hampshire, as well as the Republican nomination and, ultimately, the presidency.

1. He has an overwhelming lead in the polls — "Trump’s overwhelming lead in the polls," Politico reported Thursday, "is far larger than his advantage in Iowa." According to Real Clear Politics, Trump is leading his nearest competitor, Marco Rubio, by 21 percentage points in New Hampshire. In Iowa, he was only leading by 4.7 points heading into caucus day.

2. New Hampshire is less evangelical, more moderate — Cruz won Iowa in part because he was backed by religious evangelical voters, which are more plentiful in the Midwest and southern states, The Washington Post reported. In the northeastern state of New Hampshire, there are fewer religious types and more moderates and libertarians, and that's where candidates seen as less appealing to evangelicals often devote their time and resources. Trump, a New York billionaire on his third marriage, is more likely to appeal to New Hampshire voters than Iowans.

3. Establishment candidates will divide the vote — "There are more candidates competing in New Hampshire, many of whom have practically lived there for months or years," a New Hampshire Republican told Politico this week, referring to Jeb Bush, Chris Christie, and John Kasich. "Congrats to Rubio [on placing third in Iowa], but now everyone will [go] after him with withering attacks. The real race in New Hampshire is for second," said another Republican.

4. Trump will defuse Cruz's "disgraceful" tactics this time — "Ted Cruz didn't win Iowa, he stole it," Trump tweeted after his defeat in Iowa, pointing out suspicious get-out-the-vote flyers that Cruz's campaign reportedly distributed. "What he did was a disgrace," Trump told Fox News on Wednesday, USA Today reported. "And it's a disgrace to the electoral process." Ben Carson also took issue with the Cruz campaign, accusing it of spreading false rumors that he was dropping out of the race. Cruz subsequently apologized to Carson, but now all of the candidates, especially Trump and Carson, will be vigilant and ready to stop Cruz and his tactics.

5. He's still drawing record crowds to his rallies — Donald Trump explained to a WBUR reporter in Milford, New Hampshire, on Tuesday why he opts for bigger arena events over smaller town halls. "You know one of the reporters just asked me, why don’t you do town hall meetings? I said, because there’s another room this size where it’s packed, also. So, we have 5,000 people. And, if we do town halls, we’ll be doing about 200 a day and we still won’t be able to catch up."

6. He's back on top of the news cycle — On Wednesday, Trump commented on President Barack Obama's recent visit to a mosque to give a speech. "Maybe he feels comfortable there," he said, igniting headlines around the globe, The Washington Post reported. While Trump continues to garner the front page, Ted Cruz's moment in the spotlight after his Iowa win was already fading two days later.

7. Cruz's Trump-bashing could backfire — Following his win in Iowa, "Ted Cruz was in rare form Wednesday night as he mocked Donald Trump over everything from losing Iowa to a previous record of liberal policy positions," Politico reported. Cruz made fun of the way Trump says "huge," accused him of throwing a "Trumper Tantrum" after his loss, and suggested Trump shamefully walked away from his debts when he declared bankruptcy. While the attacks might resonate with Cruz's core supporters, too many personal attacks can sometimes make a candidate appear petty, and turn off undecided voters.

"Can Still Win" vs. "Will Still Win", shows there is some doubt.

There should be no doubt about Trump taking New Hampshire by a large margin.   But pundits and some polls are now saying otherwise. It may be closer that anyone ever realized.   Look at the PPP Poll Rush was talking about this morning.   Trump 25%, Cruz and Rubio with 21% each.

By the way #2   - moderates favoring Trump.   Why would that be?   I thought you were all done with moderate nominees, yet are not shaken by moderates favoring your candidate.

Don't forget that New Hampshire permits voters to choose their primary the day of the vote.   That may or may not be to Trump's benefit.

And you point is what, exactly.  Or is that you may or may not have one?   :pondering:

Only place TRUMP will have problems is NV. Not with the voters BUT the FIX will be in for RUBIO like IA where he came out of no where in the last minute. NV is a caucus state and easy to put a FIX in. :patriot:

TRUMP does need to start spending that 40 Million behind Budget he said he has. He needs a better ground game, phone banks, and door knockers and has to realize the enemy is the RINOGOPe and that CRUZ is a competitor not the enemy. He needs to get on RUBIO case asap and stay on it. Remember the only way the Anti Establishment of either party WINS is with TRUMP, CRUZ or Crazy Bernie. Any others the UNIPARTY wins! Just trying to point out an important difference in the N.H. primary that may affect Trump's chances, that wasn't mentioned in the OP.   Lots of folks may be motivated to vote in the GOP primary just to defeat Trump.  I've read interviews with voters torn whether, for example, to vote in the Dem primary for Sanders or to vote in the GOP primary to defeat Trump.   Since Trump doesn't draw his support from high-information regular voters,  N.H.'s voting rules could be a wild card, facilitating participation by the Trump-pets or encouraging those disgusted by the man to switch from the primary they'd normally be a part of.

Well reason #1 is now invalid. PPP has Trump only up 3 to Cruz and Rubio in NH today. Trumps inevitability has been thoroughly destroyed by the huge Cruz win in IA and he knows it. That is why he is babbling about suing Cruz, redoing the IA election and generally being a whiny loser.

I heard Trump was doing retail politics in Exeter, meeting business leaders, visiting police department.

As for #7, I see Ted Cruz is not averse to getting in the mud. I heard on the radio he was just pounding Trump with personal insults at a rally this afternoon. It's good to know he remembers how to play politics after all those months of playing nice with Donald Trump.

The thing is, Donald was in pretty good shape going into New Hampshire. Iowa was always going to be a crap shoot for him; all he needed to do was keep the pressure on and he probably would've won New Hampshire.

His meltdown over supposed "dirty tricks" and his usual calling out of the Palin and Breitbart.com dogs to back him up appears to have even jeopardized that.

Rand Paul - From the article posted by Bigun:

Quote
“Think if we, the Republican Party, becomes the party of angry people, that insinuate that most immigrants are drug dealers or rapists, that’s a terrible direction for our party,” the Kentucky senator and presidential candidate told the Alan Colmes Show on Thursday. “We are never going to grow as a party, we are never going to increase our vote among the Hispanic population, the black population, among women, all of those things we need to expand our party, Donald Trump takes us in the wrong direction.

“He would be a disaster,” he added. “We’ll be, we’ll be slaughtered, in a landslide. That’s why my every waking hour is to try to stop Donald Trump from being our nominee.”

One of the tragedies of this election season is that Trump's ascendancy has sucked the air out of the candidacies of the several of most talented folks out there.   Paul,  Fiorina, Walker, Jindal - all unable to get traction because of the media circus created by Trump.

My best wishes to Rand Paul - he's got a heck of a fight ahead of him to keep his Senate seat,  especially in the current environment.   I hope he gets to run for President again someday - I already regret not supporting him this time around.
