The aspirations of 18-year old Ted Cruz
« on: January 25, 2016, 03:35:49 am »
In 1988, high school senior Ted Cruz reflected on his life's ambitions while attending Second Baptist School in Houston, TX. Now, he is a Republican Senator running for the office of the President of the United States of America.

??? Seriously??  Poor video quality ... poor photo shop.
I Believe in the United States of America as a Government of the people, by the people, for the people; whose just powers are derived from the consent of the governed; a democracy in a republic; a sovereign nation of many sovereign states; a perfect union one and inseparable; established upon those principles of freedom, equality, justice and humanity for which American patriots sacrificed their lives and fortunes.  I therefore believe it is my duty to my country to love it; to support its Constitution; to obey its laws to respect its flag; and to defend it against all enemies.

It is supposedly from 1988.  The video cameras of the time created poor quality video.  It looks authentic to me.

I don't think it matters much since it is almost 30 years ago, but I assume it may come up in a campaign ad or two.

Me too.  I don't think there is much for Cruz to worry about here, but stuff gets edited and distorted during elections so who knows.

I hope everyone understands that this hyperventilating past transgression stuff, whether it is about Cruz, Trump, Hillary or Rubio has no impact whatsoever on election outcomes. It is noise, completely ignored by more than 99% of voters.  As are attack ads.  An aside: no human being in history has ever wasted more money than Jeb Bush has...on attack ads.

I tend to agree that Jeb has wasted a lot of money on attack ads, but only because he has been attacking Rubio instead of Trump and Cruz.  We won't know for sure until after IA, NH, and SC.

Attack ads are effective.  That is why they are used by every successful campaign.

They used to be effective before everyone, over 30 years time, learned and understood exactly what they are - they are an anachronism now, a vestige of the past. Times have changed for campaigns and it is much harder to move voters with methods developed in a previous era. Had Bush attempted such a tactic on Trump, not only would it have not worked, it would have backfired very badly (as if things could get any worse for Jeb).

I think Rubio would say R2R attack ads have damaged his campaign and his poll numbers indicate it, but I don't have a substantive website or article to prove it, so we can agree to disagree.
