Marco Rubio, the Republican presidential contender who has been touted as a possible choice of the party's "establishment", was once arrested in a Miami park notorious for gang violence, drug-dealing and prostitution, a newspaper profile has revealed.

He was detained along with two friends while going through a wayward late teenage phase for drinking alcohol in his home city's Alice C Wainwright Park after it had been closed to the public for the night.

Mr Rubio, a United States senator for Florida, was not charged after the arrest and the case was eventually dismissed.

Todd Harris, a spokesman for the candidate, said he had been arrested for breaking a municipal code by drinking beer but added that Mr Rubio had not been held in custody or appeared in court.

This nothingburger originated in the WaPo, which is hardly a GOP mouthpiece.

When I was a kid in Brooklyn, that's what families did! A picnic in Prospect park or Valley Stream. And dad and our family friends brought the beer! As far as I remember, it wasn't illegal.

Today, however, with the two-dozen suffocating rules and regulations in NYC parks, the bureaucracy has outlawed having a good time in the parks WE paid for. Who says we are not ruled subjects of the powerful?
