Rand Paul: GOP is turning into 'the old white man's party'

Sen. Rand Paul (Ky.) says the GOP is at risk of turning into “the old white man’s party.”

“I think it’s important that the Republican Party not be seen as a party that’s not welcoming and that [doesn’t] want new people,” the presidential candidate told host Chris Hayes on MSNBC’s “All In."

“I’ve said we need to be a party that has, you know, [people] with earrings, without earrings, with tattoos, without tattoos, black, white, brown, rich [and] poor,” Paul said. "If anything, one of the faults of the Republican Party is we’re not diverse enough.

“When we become the old white man’s party — which we’ve been kind of headed towards for a while — we’re never going to win another election.”

Paul warned Republican voters are making a big mistake by rallying behind Donald Trump, who has for months led in national polls of the race.

“We need to be careful about letting the voice of the Republican Party be someone who thinks that all immigrants are rapists or drug dealers,” Paul said of Trump.

“I think that Trump is a disaster for the Republican Party and a disaster for the image that would cultivate and bring new people in, but also for those who have a serious approach for how we would defend the country.”

“That should scare people to death,” he added. "Anybody that’s gotten beyond third grade would say, ‘oh, my goodness, we don’t want a president that is eager to use our nuclear arsenal.'

"We want one, Republican or Democrat, who’s reasonable and restrained and knows it’s a deterrent, but [is] not eager to use it, by any means.”

Paul has been on a media blitz ahead of Fox Business Network's presidential debate on Thursday night.

He has been battling with the network over his exclusion from the main debate stage, arguing he should have made the cut based on his polling numbers. He has asked Fox Business to reconsider letting him on the main stage, and plans to boycott the undercard debate if they refuse.

I just see failure written all over this stuff because A: It’s not coming from a position of sincerity, and B: In an effort to try and pander to every single group that is eligible to vote in this country you’re bound to piss one of them off. So who gets sacrificed? Evangelicals maybe?

I’m sure they won’t appreciate the establishment trying to force upon them the acceptance of homosexuality and same sex marriage. So then the gays get offended in turn because you quickly try to make good with Evangelicals. Or maybe black folks get offended when you try and pander to white males, and vice versa.

He didn't say the GOP is the old white man's party. He said it's headed there. Considering the Democrat candidates are old white people, he should have redirected his comments.

Rand Paul was of course weened by his father Ron.

I don't follow either, but do have certain respect for Ron for his zeal to defend The Constitution.

Because I don't follow RAND that much (he is quite the showman), I asked how similar his 'doctrine' is to that of his father, Ron.

The GOP has always been "a party of white men", except for one unfortunate period after its inception when it backed black rule in the South after the War Between the States.

And just what's wrong with that, may I ask?

Are not senior citizens one of the fastest growing demographic groups?
That means more "old white men" for the GOP!

Anyone who believes that the GOP can become the "party of blacks" or "the party of Hispanics" is, quite simply, delusional. Totally out-of-touch with reality.

Saying in wartime:
"You go to war with the army you have."

Point for Republicans to remember:
"We go to political war with the demographic we have".

And that is, largely, white folks, regardless of their age.

The Republicans could easily become the party of minorities, youth and immigrants if they became more socialist than the Democrats.
