WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Pentagon says it briefly lost contact with two small Navy craft in the Persian Gulf on Tuesday but has received assurances from Iran that the crew and vessels will be returned safely and promptly.

Pentagon spokesman Peter Cook tells The Associated Press that the boats were moving between Kuwait and Bahrain when the US lost contact with them.

Cook says, "We have been in contact with Iran and have received assurances that the crew and the vessels will be returned promptly."

Gee how nice of valjar to let Iran check out a fully armed US Navy ship. Will she let them keep them too?

They gave that hellfire missile to Cuba....so 2 US navy ships doesn't seem a far reach.

US officials scramble after Iran takes two Navy ships into custody

By Kristina Wong - 01/12/16 04:18 PM EST

Iran has taken two small U.S. Navy ships into custody, Pentagon officials said Tuesday, creating a diplomatic scramble just hours before President Obama's State of the Union address.

A senior defense official said two U.S. Navy riverine craft were going from Kuwait to Bahrain when they encountered Iranian military vessels. Ten American sailors were taken into military custody, the official said.

"They ran into some type of an issue, and were picked up by the Iranian craft," the official said, who added the issue is not yet understood.

"Subsequently, U.S. and Iranian government officials have discussed the situation and negotiated their transit," the official said.

"They're being allowed to continue their journey," said the official, who did not want to characterize whether the Americans were being escorted by the Iranian vessels.

"We have received assurances the sailors will promptly be allowed to continue their journey."

A second senior defense official said earlier that the Pentagon had "lost contact" with the U.S. boats and had been in communication with Iranian authorities.

Deputy national security adviser Ben Rhodes told reporters Tuesday the U.S. is working to resolve the situation so that American personnel are returned to "normal deployment."

“We are working on it and we are hopeful we will be able to resolve the issue," Rhodes said.

Meanwhile, Secretary of State John Kerry has been "in touch with Iranian authorities on this issue," according to a senior administration official.

The incident erupted just ahead of Obama's final State of the Union address, which he hopes to use to tout legacy items including the nuclear deal with Iran — an agreement that Republicans on Capitol Hill fiercely oppose.

Iran is just days away from receiving certification that it has met its obligations under the nuclear pact, opening the door to billions of dollars in sanctions relief.

Sen. Barbara Boxer, a Democrat from California, downplayed Tuesday's incident on MSNBC. She said the two U.S. ships had a “mechanical problem” and weren’t “planning to be anywhere near Iran-claimed territory.”

“Hopefully this will be resolved and it won't be an issue we’ll be talking about in a couple of hours,” Boxer said.

But Sen. Cory Gardner (R-Colo.) floated that perhaps Obama should delay his State of the Union address until members of Congress are briefed on the situation.

"I think the White House needs to be honest and transparent as quickly as possible with the members of the Congress, the House and the Senate — perhaps that even means a delay to the start of the State of the Union tonight to talk about exactly what happened," Gardner said on CNN.

Gardner cited Iran's apparent "pattern of aggravating action," including taking ships under the U.S. flag and recently testing ballistic missiles in spite of sanctions.

Iran a few weeks ago conducted a live-fire exercise just 1,500 yards away from a U.S. and French aircraft carrier that were transiting in the Strait of Hormuz with little notice, an action that defense officials blasted as "unnecessarily provocative and unsafe."

White House press secretary Josh Earnest said on CNN's "The Lead" that he was "confident" there will be officials from the National Security Council briefing members of Congress about the administration's talks with Iran.

"Certainly the United States has been concerned with the kind of provocative, destabilizing actions that have been a hallmark of Iranian behavior over the last several decades," Earnest said.

Cotton: Iran taking Navy boats 'humiliating'

By Jesse Byrnes

Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) on Tuesday evening ripped the Obama administration over its handling of Iran, saying the seizure of two U.S. Navy ships was "humiliating" to the nation and President Obama.

"This kind of openly hostile action is not surprising," Cotton said during an appearance on CNN's "Situation Room" shortly after news emerged that the two ships and 10 U.S. sailors had been captured.

Cotton then pointed to reporting from CNN that a senior administration official said there wasn't any indication that the situation with the sailors was hostile in nature.

"Senior members of Barack Obama's administration are apologizing for Iran seizing two U.S. Navy vessels and holding 10 sailors hostage," Cotton said. "The White House tonight is a hotbed of cold feet."

Cotton said he didn't think it was "coincidental" that Iran had seized the ships hours before President Obama's final State of the Union address. CNN had reported the sailors may be in Iran overnight.

"It's humiliating for Barack Obama and therefore the United States to have American sailors held hostage during his final State of the Union," Cotton said.

U.S. officials have said that they are monitoring the situation closely, and that Iran has assured Obama administration officials that the sailors are safe and would be returned promptly.

Iran's seizure of the ships also comes days before billions of dollars in sanctions relief is opened up to Tehran through the international nuclear pact reached last year by the U.S. and other world powers.

"This is the ayatollahs trying to get maximum leverage and inflict maximum humiliation on the United States and on President Obama," Cotton said.

"Unfortunately, that's been the story that we've seen since the nuclear deal was signed in the summer," Cotton added. "It won't be the final humiliation, it's just one more sip from this bitter cup that will be offered again and again."

10 U.S. sailors in Iranian custody

http://www.cnn.com/2016/01/12/politics/10-u-s-sailors-in-iranian-custody/index.html

Quote
Washington (CNN)Ten American sailors are in Iranian custody after two small U.S. naval craft apparently briefly entered Iranian territorial waters, a U.S. senior defense official said Tuesday.

The official, however, expects the situation to be resolved quickly. A senior administration official said there is nothing to indicate this was anything hostile on the part of any entity in Iran, adding that the U.S. has received high-level assurances that the sailors will be released promptly.

White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest told CNN's Jake Tapper that President Barack Obama will be in touch with members of Congress about the incident.

"Certainly, everybody should be aware of the fact we have been in touch with the Iranians and they have assured us that our sailors are safe and that they'll be allowed to continue their journey promptly," Earnest said.

A U.S. official said the sailors may be spending the night in Iran, and it's not expected that they would depart until after daylight.

A senior administration official told CNN that the U.S. lost contact with the two ships, which were en route from Kuwait to Bahrain.

"We subsequently have been in communication with Iranian authorities, who have informed us of the safety and well-being of our personnel," the senior administration official said. "We have received assurances the sailors will promptly be allowed to continue their journey."

The U.S. is uncertain whether the vessels, which were sailing near Farsi Island in the Persian Gulf, intentionally entered Iranian waters, and the senior defense official said no distress call was made by the ships.

What are the ROE that let the mightiest Navy in the world get captured by Iran?????????  What kind of Navy boat only has a 10 man crew?

The semi-official Iranian news agency, FARS, said the Iranian Revolutionary Guard’s navy has detained 10 foreign forces, believed to be Americans, and said the sailors were trespassing in Iranian waters. FARS also reported that one of the 10 sailors was a woman.

That pic explains much for me.

Both CNN and Fox are using this DOD handout so I assume this is the craft captured...

Just listening to CNN..they are guessing one of the boats suffered mechanical trouble and the other craft stayed to help thereby both getting captured...

A new "Iranian hostage situation".

Amazing, the lack of a proper response from The United States.
Show's how far we've fallen.

What would happen next if Trump was president?

Remember when the chicoms returned a plane in pieces several years ago. I wonder how many crates a boat that size would take.
