This new policy is similar to the deferral period for a woman who has engaged in sexual activity with a man who had previously sexual activity with another man, or for someone who has traveled to a country where malaria is prevalent.

    The Food and Drug Administration released final rules on Monday that would allow gay and bisexual men to donate blood if they have been celibate for one year. Under previous rules, men who have had sex with men are banned from donating indefinitely.

I bet if they asked a homosexual man in need of a transfusion whether he'd like "gay" blood or blood from a heterosexual, he'd probably err on the side of caution.

I don't know anything about the qualifications of the people that check the blood. It seems to me that it'd be a pretty big deal if they weren't doing a good job.

Yeah, it's not a big deal, but from the perspective of gay people that know they're clean it probably does feel like an indignity. They want to help people that need help, same as everybody else that donates.

I know gay people that lie and donate blood anyway. I imagine that is pretty common. I really don't think changing the rules will put the public in danger.

It was. 1996 - 97, in fact, when the UK had to (for various reasons) import quite a substantial amount of blood from the USA. Our HIV and Hep C rate skyrocketed because the blood companies in the USA were drawing blood from felons and druggies (for payment) and not testing it, thanks to Clinton.

The person I'm apparently scum for not reporting served with me and died for his country in Iraq. It was still against the rules to be gay in the military at the time, so I guess I'm scum for not reporting that too. He broke the rules and donated because he knew he didn't have aids and he cared about his brothers. I was almost there already, but I think I'm finally done with this community. Good luck everybody.
