Syria air strikes: MPs authorise UK action against Islamic State
« on: December 03, 2015, 12:11:35 am »
MPs have overwhelmingly voted by 397 to 223 to authorise UK air strikes against so-called Islamic State in Syria after an impassioned 10-hour Commons debate.

The BBC understands 67 Labour MPs sided with the government in backing military action as David Cameron secured a larger than expected Commons majority.

The PM said they had "taken the right decision to keep the country safe" but opponents said the move was a mistake.

The government has said bombing raids will begin "as soon as [is] practical".

Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond said he would not give a "running commentary" on operations, having earlier suggested bombings could begin as early as Thursday. Eight bombers are on standby at the RAF Akrotiri air base in Cyprus.

Welcoming the result, Mr Hammond said Britain was "safer because of the actions taken by MPs today". He added: "Military strikes alone won't help Syria, won't keep us safe from Daesh. But this multi-strand approach will."

Good news indeed!
"I wish it need not have happened in my time," said Frodo.

"So do I," said Gandalf, "and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us."

Finally some concrete action.

10 hour debate? Really? Should they have needed that much time? What's to discuss?

After a year-long news cycle of murderous rampage against innocent Syrians and Iraqis, ISIS jihadists have forfeited their right to life.

British Tornados take off from RAF Akrotiri

British Tornados have taken off from RAF Akrotiri, ITV News Correspondent Emma Murphy reports.

It's a 30 minute flight, tops. We don't believe in hanging around.

To put it bluntly - the Worm. He bottled the whole Syria red line thing and cost us, the UK, a lot more damage in terms of intelligence capability than you'll be allowed to know for the next hundred years. Since then, we've been in Iraq, but Syria has been his problem and his problem ONLY. If it wasn't for the Paris attacks, it would STILL be his problem and his problem ONLY as far as we are concerned.

And not by accident either!

I assume it was a "free" vote where members were allowed to vote their conscience, not the party line.

It was. Corbyn wanted to go the party whip route, but was told in no uncertain terms that if he tried, he'd be the shortest serving leader of the Labour Party in history.

Would his replacement have been better or worse than he?

You do like asking the tricky questions!

For the Labour Party, getting rid of him will give them a better chance of getting back into power in 2020. He is an old school socialist worker type - ban the bomb etc - which doesn't really play well with the electorate as a whole any more. He's already managed to split the left quite hard, and the more pragmatic power sniffers want him gone.

For the country, keeping him is amusing, at least, and it lets the Conservatives move slightly to the center (which is where most of the people are) without diluting their message.

I watched about an hour of this debate on BBC.  It is amazing.  The PM debates with any/all members of Parliament, live, one-on-one and before the world.

It's pretty remarkable to watch.  And ten hours for a decision on military action really isn't all that extraordinary.  The Brits might call it "prudent".   ^-^
