California Arrests Man And Seizes His Firearms Collection For No Apparent Reason

The big news out of California is that super-liberal Attorney General Kamala Harris has arrested a dangerously demented man and seized his illegal firearms collection, protecting the people from a potential mass shooting. The only problem is, none of it is true. What the state actually did was confiscate a legally owned gun collection from a man who has never once broken the law. They’re not coming for our guns, until they are.

The Fresno Bee reports that on November 12 the California Department of Justice performed a 12-hour raid on Albert Sheakalee’s house. They confiscated 531 firearms and arrested him. They reason for this raid is a California law that bans dangerously mentally ill people from owning or possessing guns.

Of the 209 handguns, 88 shotguns, 234 rifles seized, officials claim that 10 of the rifles were “assault weapons” banned by the State of California. In addition to being charged with a banned person in possession of firearms, Sheakalee was also slapped with possessing banned assault weapons. Police also found 10 “high-capacity” magazines, which are illegal.

Now here’s the truth: Albert Sheakalee has a Federal Firearms License (FFL) and collects, sells, and trades guns. He has absolutely no criminal record and every one of the guns taken from him were legally owned. The 10 “assault rifles” were owned prior to California’s ban and were grandfathered in. He had them registered with the California DOJ as required by law. His normal capacity magazines were also legally owned under a similar grandfather provision.

As for his mental health, in August Sheakalee was going through some tough times and sought treatment. Basically he just needed someone to talk about his problems with. He was not institutionalized, either voluntarily or involuntarily, and was certainly never judged to be a danger to himself or society. Little did he know that his effort to seek help landed him on California’s Armed & Prohibited Persons System (APPS) database, which triggered the raid on his home.

Sheakalee is an Iranian Christian that fled the country in 1970’s following the Islamic Revolution. He came to the US, got a degree in accounting and became a US citizen. He is an upstanding member of society and has never run afoul of the law. He is a retired hospital budget director and he and his wife own a retirement community. This is a good guy and a pillar of the community.

So what we have here is the government confiscating firearms from a man who has broken no laws and is not banned from owning guns. Sheakalee will likely lose hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of firearms and his right to gun ownership, all because he was a little down and wanted to talk to somebody. He was never a risk to himself or the public.

This is exactly why liberal gun control efforts must be fought tooth and nail. Much like how “domestic violence” gun laws allow police to seize weapons from people without a trial or conviction, so do supposed mental health gun laws. Being sad or feeling anxious are not grounds to strip a person of his or her Constitutionally protected rights.

In addition, people who have genuine mental health issues are going to look at this case and decide not to seek treatment. Why would they attempt to get help when they know the government is going to take their guns and their gun ownership rights?

The next time some liberal weasel tries to tell you that nobody is coming for your guns, remind them of Albert Sheakalee and his confiscated firearms collection. If it can happen to him, it can happen to anybody.

He sounds like one of the less-crazy Californians.

  • Ah, the air is so much fresher here...
If you own firearms, never, ever, ever go for counseling or anything mental health related unless you are prepared to lose them, or hide them and claim you sold or lost them.

This should be challenged as overly broad and vague for mental competence. You should at least be evaluated and certified as some kind of danger or threat, not just the kind of sweeping pretense given here.
The Republic is lost.
