Politico: House in 'Simmering' Split Over New Hillary Email Probe

House Republicans face a sticky political dilemma with Hillary Clinton — should they launch a separate probe of the Democratic presidential front-runner's use of a private email server and whether it violated national security, or just let the Justice Department, which is already investigating, do its job?

Politico reports that GOP lawmakers are divided on the issue, with a "simmering" internal debate playing out with no resolution in sight.

Before Republican House Speaker John Boehner resigned amid pushing by GOP hardliners, he had prevented House Oversight Chairman Jason Chaffetz and others from firing up an email probe.

His concern: "Muddying the waters around the ongoing Benghazi Committee probe," Politico says. But his Boehner's adieu, the GOP landscape on Capitol Hill has changed, with some Republicans ready for a full-fledged House investigation.

They include Rep. Jim Jordan, an Ohio Republican, who told the political news website: "I just think it needs to happen . . . We already know [Clinton] messed up."

But others, like Rep. Mark Meadows, a North Carolina Republican, beg to differ.

Meadows told Politico's Rachael Bade: "I think the general opinion is that we defer to the FBI because they have an investigation."

And what does newly-anointed House Speaker Paul Ryan think? According to his office, there are no updates on the matter, the website says.

And then there's the possibility of political fallout if the House decides to pounce anew on Clinton.

GOP lawmakers must weigh the new NBC/Wall Street Journal poll conducted after the House grilling of Clinton on the Benghazi attack, a hearing that included questions about her use of a private email server.

The national poll found 48 percent of Americans believe Clinton's use of the private server — which some believe compromised national security — "is NOT an important factor in your deciding whether to vote for her as president." Only 42 percent said they believed it was an important factor.

Before her testimony, a majority of Americans — 47-44 percent — had said it was important.

The poll also showed Americans — by 40-27 percent — believe the House probe into the Benghazi attack in which Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans were killed is "unfair and too partisan," rather than "fair and impartial."
