If he'd stayed as a talking head, no one would have cared. It's not policy to chase down every idiot that opens their mouth, legitimate or not.
He got busted when he tried to get security clearance for contractor work. Something that is taken fairly seriously.
Stupidly enough, if he hadn't lied about it, he'd have probably gotten clearance. It's not THAT difficult to get.
