The province of Aceh in Indonesia is the only province in Indonesia to have officially introduced Sharia law.
Now reports indicate that hundreds of Muslim men in Aceh rampaged and attacked three Christian churches on Tuesday, setting two churches on fire.
However, at the third church they were met with stiff resistance from Christians gathered to protect their church, as well as local police.
Aceh police chief Husein Hamidi told the AFP news agency: “After burning the church, the mob tried to attack another church, but it turned out Christians were already at the ready.”
He then stated: “A clash occurred, and one man was killed after being shot in the head with an air rifle.” It is thought that the man killed was one of the hundreds of Muslim men engaged in the attack.
Indonesia’s President Joko Widodo tweeted: “Stop the violence in Aceh Singkil. Any background of violence, especially religion and belief, destroys diversity.”
Indonesia has the largest Muslim population in the world.
As stated earlier, Aceh is the only province in Indonesia to have officially introduced Sharia law, and it is increasingly being applied to non-Muslims in the region.
Sharia has many extreme laws, including the amputation of the right hand for thieves, a possible death sentence for those who criticize or deny the Koran, and the allowance for husbands to beat their wives for insubordination.
Concerns about Sharia being implemented in the United States have been escalating.
Yale Law School was given $10 million dollars by a billionaire Saudi banker, Saleh Abdullah Kamel, to establish a Sharia law center at the elite law school.
