Raven's comment came while the women discussed a recent UCLA study published in the journal Evolution and Human Behavior, which found that Americans make racist assumptions based on people's names.

I don't think I could hire someone named Latrina.

Mainly because I wouldn't want to laugh everytime I saw them.

Some people aren't going to like this, but I play a little mental game when I see the local news crime blotter.  I read the headline of the crime and laughingly make up the name of the criminal before I see the real name.  In my area - 99% of the time, it's going to be a redneck name like "Billy Joe Bob" or "Bobby Ray" - or - one of those black names like "Dewayne" or "Tariq".

I picture a situation in corporate America, where the human resources specialist makes sure all of the Tyrones and Shaniquas are left in the resumes sent into the managers for review, and he tosses them all out.

All on account of those names.

My nephew is named DeWayne! he is white, and kind of dumb. Been in the Police blotter a few times too.

And Irving TX has an online "in custody" list (PDF) that is changed daily (old ones not kept online)

It's not that they're strange; it's that they are anti-establishment.  Sort of giving the finger to our culture.
