Report: Nationals fire Matt Williams

Chris Johnson    http://www.masnsports.com/nationals-pastime/2015/10/matt-williams-fired.html

After a season that ended woefully short of championship expectations, the Washington Nationals will search for a new leader for 2016 after firing manager Matt Williams this morning, acording to a report from The Washington Post.

General manager Mike Rizzo made the difficult decision less than two years after handpicking Williams, who had never managed in the majors before, to direct the Nationals' highly talented roster after Davey Johnson departed following the 2013 season.

The Nationals won a National League-best 96 games and an NL East crown a year ago, advancing to the playoffs for the second time in three seasons. But they bowed out early in October, losing to the Giants in four games in the NLDS.

Williams, the NL Manager of the Year, was criticized nationally for his decisions in the playoffs last year with specific focus on questionable bullpen strategy.

This was inevitable even before the raw sight of leadership in the "clubhouse" being in disarray (the Papelbon incident).  Rizzo should not feel too comfortable in his seat either.  The demeanor of this team did not change from the early troubles last April - and the stark comparison with the Cardinals, who also suffered many devastating injuries throughout the year, could not be more clear.  As always, it's more than just the manager...but the manager certainly was one of the problems.

Something forgotten or not mentioned.....

When the NATS won their division in 2014 under Matt Williams, during the clubhouse celebration where players wore goggles and the open lockers were covered with a plastic sheeting....champagne spraying everywhere, a sportswriter cornered Jayson Werth....the unofficial team 'leader', and asked him about Matt Williams role (he would later be named "Manager of the Year")

Jayson Werth gave a too long, pregnant pause....and practically insulted Williams' importance in the feat.

Then, a week later, after being knocked out by the San Francisco GIANTS, Werth would refuse to even be interviewed.  He dressed and left without saying a word.

It would be interesting what Buck Showalter is thinking.  The Orioles are sliding and the ownership doesn't seem keen on restocking or spending money to fill needs.  While Nats have needs as well, they are loaded with talent...they need a strong veteran manager.

It's a slam dunk then...IF...Showalter was in the last year of his contract.

The NATS would pay him handsomely to come down Rt 95.
