This Abandoned French Town Tells a Heartbreaking,Tragic Tale of WWII

Patrick Wensink

The internet loves looking at abandoned places (we are just as guilty as anyone of being fascinated by it). But once in a while the story behind why a place is abandoned is even more powerful than the ruins themselves.

Such is the case with one European village that holds a great deal of tragic history in its crumbling walls.

The 2d SS Panzer Division, "DAS REICH", was not fleeing invading Allies [ Anvil-Dragoon took place later]. They had been hunting the Maquis in the Central Massif, when they were ordered to Normandy. A Company Commander from the "DER FUEHRER" regiment was captured and [presumably] killed. The Ouradur massacre was a result of that action, and was also a warning for the Maquis to get out of the way.

In a twist of fate, many of the SS troops involved were from Alsace-Lorraine.
