Why Organize a Hijab Beauty Contest?

It may seem like a contradiction that Muslim women who preach modesty would want to organize a beauty contest for hijab wearers. However, the winner and organizer of an online pageant have been explaining why the competition sought to promote the value of modesty.

Sariah Muhammad won the Hijab Beauty Queen crown via Facebook earlier this summer.

Asked to describe beauty she said, “We can’t detail the conditions for beauty because by so doing we are demeaning women.

“Every woman is beautiful but if we are talking about this competition we needed extra conditions including good reputation, family, culture, education and one’s general appearance.”

Muhammad argues a woman who wears the hijab have much to do because of the way she is negatively portrayed.

“The woman in a hijab serves as a target for both the people who believe the hijab is insufficient covering and those who blame her for advancing backwards ideas.”

Competition organizer, Egyptian designer Aaya Mahmoud explained that she wanted the competition to set some clear guidelines for Muslim women.

“Some women choose to wear the hijab show too much hair or their neck and this damages the image of women who wear the hijab. Likewise tight clothing.”

Muhammad advises pretty women to respect the principle of modesty because this is the real beauty of the woman whether she wears a hijab or not.
