Janet Jackson’s new record company may be losing sleep over her first release for BMG Records. Her new single, “No Sleeep,” got a lot of media attention when it was launched a couple of weeks ago. But so far, it’s not selling on iTunes and isn’t getting much radio play. Janet is having the same problems as Mariah Carey, Jennifer Lopez and other older singers who are trying to stay in the game and be relevant.

Janet Jackson, Mariah Carey, and Jennifer Lopez are "older"? Crank up the Victrola so I can hear them once again before I doze off.

And yet George Strait can still churn out the hits at over 60 years old.

When you build a career at least partially around sex appeal, eventually the whole notion wears off. Now, that's not to say these ladies aren't aging gracefully—for women in their 40s they look very good—but you can only be young and hip for so long, especially in pop and "urban" environments. The next generation up isn't going to see a woman old enough to be their mother as cool. Ever.

Now, country and rock, on the other hand, if the music is still good, it will still sell.

Tina Turner, Barbara Streisand, Carol King, Carly Simon, Stevie Nicks, Madonna, not to mention women from even earlier times.

Men like Mick Jagger, Rod Stewart, Van Morrison, Eric Clapton now all over 70, and Tony Bennett over 85 I believe.

Maybe the younger gals music is the cause of their lack of recognition?

In that business unfortunately yes. So is Brittany Spears, Christina Aguilera, Beyonce and LeeAnn Rimes. When you turn 30 your shelf life evaporates quickly.
