Illegal Immigrants Account For 37 Percent of Federal Sentences In 2014

New data from the United States Sentencing Commission (USSC) blows a hole through the oft-repeated line that people only want to come to America to work.
The illegal population is a major contributor to federal crimes in America.
Illegal immigrants account for about 3.5 percent of the U.S population, but according to USSC data, they represented 36.7 percent of federal sentences in fiscal year 2014 following criminal convictions.
Citizens accounted for 43,479 (or 58.0 percent) of 74,911 sentencing cases, illegal immigrants accounted for 27,505 (or 36.7 percent) of the total sentences, legal immigrants made up 3,017 (or 4.0 percent), and the remainder (about 1 percent) were cases in which the offender was either extradited or had an unknown status.
Illegal immigrants represented 12.0 percent of murder convictions, 12.3 percent of money laundering, 16.9 percent of drug trafficking cases, 20.0 percent of kidnapping/hostage taking.
More than 2,200 people received federal sentences for drug possession in 2014, and nearly three-quarters of them were illegal immigrants. The commission’s data showed 1,681 illegal aliens were sentenced on convictions of possession last year, comprising 74.1 percent of the national total.
The statistics only include primary federal offenses, and don’t include local convictions or sentences, which is where most rape and murder cases would appear.
The data became public just as Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has pushed for tougher immigration laws, and has cited last week’s shooting death of a California woman at the hands of an illegal immigrant as the latest example of the need for more enforcement.
