Former Iranian president Ayatollah Akbar Hashemi-Rafsanjani said Monday that Israel should be wiped off the map.
Rafsanjani is head of the Expediency Council, the main advisory body to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Members of the council are chosen by Iran's supreme leader.
The remarks, made on the eve of the latest deadline between Iran and world powers to come to an agreement about Iran’s nuclear program, appeared in an interview conducted by the Al Ahd news website, an affiliate of Hezbollah, the Iranian-sponsored Lebanese terrorist organization.
In the interview, Rafsanjani called Israel a "forged regime" that is "temporary." He said Israel’s “alien existence” should be wiped off the map.
Rafsanjani made similar remarks in 2005 when he was first elected president of Iran, saying at that time Israel was a “disgraceful blot” that should be “wiped off the face of the earth.”
Regarded as a political moderate, Rafsanjani said in 2005, "Anybody who recognizes Israel will burn in the fire of the Islamic nation's fury, [while] any [Islamic leader] who recognizes the Zionist regime means he is acknowledging the surrender and defeat of the Islamic world."
Those remarks were part of a speech he made at a conference dubbed The World Without Zionism.
