Hundreds Of Sanctuary Cities Allow Illegal Alien Criminals To Hide In Plain Sight

Robert Gehl
July 6, 2015

So we know that Kathryn Steinle was murdered by an illegal immigrant who had been repeatedly deported and returned to the U.S.

From Jail, Sanchez confessed to killing Steinke and said he sought refuge – literally – in San Francisco precisely because it was a “sanctuary city” – a city with police who won’t ask questions about your immigration status and Border Patrol can’t find you.

There are literally hundreds of these cities. I’ll put a list below by state, compiled here, but there may be many, many more.

“Sanctuary Cities” are nothing new. In 1979, Los Angeles was the first city to prevent police from asking about detainees’ immigration status. There’s a reason behind this:

Police want to maintain a good relationship with the citizens they’re sworn to protect. If residents – many of whom are illegal immigrants – know that if police encounter them they face deportation, they will be less likely to deal with police on any level. That can mean more unsolved crimes and a destructive climate of distrust.

Sometimes city councils pass actual ordinances (like San Francisco) banning police from asking questions about citizens’ residency status, other police departments have the equivalent of a “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” when it comes to immigration status.

Living in the Phoenix area (listed as a “sanctuary city,” by at least one group), I understand and sympathize with police concerns. If there’s a crime, you want cooperative residents – you need them – to help solve the crime. It’s a valid point.

But there must be an alternative to ignoring federal law. As I mentioned, Phoenix is listed as a sanctuary city … and so is Mesa and Tucson, but with the passage of SB1070, you’d think that would put a halt to any of this. Maybe it simply put the unofficial “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” in place.

One year ago tomorrow, I wrote about a woman who was raped by an illegal immigrant in Philadelphia. It was the same scenario. Milton Garcia was picked up by Philly police but let go because their police won’t turn illegal aliens over to Immigration. The mayor didn’t care. They were going to continue their polices and the rape victim could go pound sand.

What is the alternative? Perhaps there isn’t one. Police need to enforce all the laws on the books – including immigration laws. If that makes there job more difficult because an illegal alien who witnesses a murder is afraid they’ll be deported if they report the crime to police, then perhaps that’s the price we’ll have to pay, right?

Note: Here is the list, compiled by ojjpac.org. It seems to be the most updated one on the web. The notes next to the cities are their own. Thanks to the Ohio Jobs & Justice PAC.

And  no one is doing a damned thing about it!

What is the basis, for a jurisdiction holding somebody indefinitely if and when the feds won't take them?

The murderer in San Francisco, supposedly went there from somewhere in Texas.

My town is not on that list. But my guess is that if I call my police department, they will NT hold somebody indefinitely in the city jail, if the feds won't take them.

IOW the root problem is the federal government's failure to enforce the nation's immigration laws.

Obviously conservatives are angry with jurisdictions which proudly and notoriously announce their policy to not detain over immigration issues.

I challenge everybody on this forum to contact their local police, and determine if they will hold somebody indefinitely in jail, over immigration issues.

Instead of pound keys and argue back and forth here, I intend to find out today from my city police.

I made a general statement that no one was doing a damn'ed thing about all those sanctuary cities.  I was not attempting to go into the issue in depth but since you raise the point YES the failure of the federal government to enforce or laws is a HUGE factor in the overall problem but certainly not the ONLY factor. I will guarantee you that NOTHING much would change in the vast majority of the cities named in the above article even if the federal government were to magically start enforcing our immigration law tomorrow!

I want candidates, Trump, Cruz, Bush etc. to learn precisely the chain of events for this illegal immigrant murderer, in order to define the problem assign blame, and reach a solution.

Maybe the Texas (and California) legislatures need laws to withhold law enforcement block grant money from sanctuary cities, etc.

The US House and Senate could pass such measures, right now. Put it on Obama's desk. Nice setup for the elections.

My town is not on the list but is a sanctuary city.

The administration(s) and congress are getting what they want without having to take a public position.
Not having a law enforcement background, I am understanding the accepted process is for the local jurisdiction to arrest and document any law breaker and hand those with federal level offenses be turned over to the feds.  NOW if the feds turn them loose, then it is on the feds but if our local LEO's refuse to enforce the law because the FEDS turn them loose, then the problems is with local LEOs.

Refusing to do your job because someone else will not do their makes you just as wrong.
