In an interview with ABC News’ George Stephanopoulus, newly-announced Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump said that he would love to have talk show host Oprah Winfrey as a vice-presidential candidate.

“Back in 1999, when you were thinking of running as the Reform Party candidate, you told Larry King that you’d consider Oprah for vice president,” Stephanopoulus noted.

“I like Oprah,” Trump said defensively. “What can I tell you?”

“Is she still on your shortlist?”

“No she’s great, she’s talented, she’s a friend of mine…” Trump said. “I think Oprah would be great. I’d love to have Oprah. I think we’d win easily, actually.”....

Good grief. Could he possibly pick anyone more liberal than Oprah (perhaps Warren maybe)? Both of them have more money than they know what to do with. 2016 Trump. 2020 Oprah - the FIRST BLACK FEMALE president. Got it. Now what was this about Trump not being a siphon for the DEMS or should I say LIBERALS?

Interesting. Most conservatives I admire and respect wouldn't compromise their conservative values just to get elected (win) and certainly would never select a liberal to do so. Last time I checked, Republicans who compromise their conservative values and side with liberals are classified as RINO's.

I absolutely agree, and that's what puzzles me about my "true conservative" and libertarian friends who support Trump.

But maybe he really was joking about the Orca, er, Oprah.

Indeed. And there's a whole lotta that 'compromising' going on with this Trump thing.

Kind of makes you wonder if there was any conservatism in there to begin with, doesn't it?

I mean who discards basic values because a personality comes along that some people like?

Probably was, but even if he meant it, it's not the most outrageous thing he's ever said that people have swallowed and said, "Well if Donald wants it, I'm for it....."

I'll say Nixon. Based just on the growth of government during his administration. The administrative state of environmentalism began under his watch, with the creation of the EPA.

Reagan was the last real leader the republicans have put up as a candidate.
All of the candidates since regale in "I knew Reagan" or "Just like Reagan did" but none of them will promise to govern like Reagan.
No, Reagan was not perfect, don't expect perfect, all I expect is an honorable, fair minded effort and we have not gotten that since Reagan left office.

My point was that Reagan was the exception among Republican presidents. None of his 20th century predecessors (with the possible exception of Coolidge) was much of a conservative.

The idea that electing Bush I was the moment when the GOP sold its soul does not withstand the test of history.
