90% of People Fail Answer? - What about you?
« on: June 11, 2015, 10:45:27 am »

One of my friends on FaceBook posted this riddle/equation.  Dozens engaged and gave their answer.

They were wrong.

I have a link that explains the answer and will post it at the end of the day.

My answer was "1".

What's yours?

LOL~  I playfully chided my close friend...calling him a maroon.

He speaks English/Russian/Hebrew and French.

Nothing funnier than a Russian Jew speaking French....

He posted the correct answer.

....and he's not letting me forget it.    :silly:

He's right: it's 12.

Let's just say it's a basic middle school concept at the heart of it.

Nope...it's not 12.

I'll post the solution later this evening.

The first two lines are not relevant.
All that matters is the last line.
And that line has to do with 'orders of operation'.

However, the question is a cheat. They deliberately did not use parenthesis.

The question is all about 1 + 1 X 0.

Is this 1? or is this 0?

So, it is ambiguous. It should have been written as (1+1) x 0 + 1 or 1 + (1 x 0).

That is how you write code. You never let the computer 'decide' anything. You have to tell it what you want. So, the question is bogus.

I guess the general order of operation would make the answer 2, but it is a silly puzzle to begin with. Linux in any TkPerl IDE would spit this stuff out in a second.

So, the real correct answer is, 'ERROR, non sequential programming'
You cannot "COEXIST" with people who want to kill you.
If they kill their own with no conscience, there is nothing to stop them from killing you.

HERE'S THE ANSWER.....

Very surprised that only 3 members attempted to solve the equation.

On 2nd thought.....I'm not surprised at all.    :tongue2:

It does not work that way in real life. If you are going to start splitting numbers on a line return, you are going to have a lot of problems in life.

I am a programmer, and this would never work. At least in my world.

I totally agree with you, 240B.

If they can't fit it all on one line, they should have made a wider jpeg.   :patriot:

It is more than even just that.

When anyone is looking at an equation, then a new line has a mathematical significance. It is not different than a plus or minus sign. It has a specific meaning.

E = M
CXC

What does this mean? All they did was confuse the output look and feel. Nothing more.
You cannot "COEXIST" with people who want to kill you.
If they kill their own with no conscience, there is nothing to stop them from killing you.

Actually, on second closer examination, this isn't even a valid expression or equation. In two spots, an operation is plainly missing. So this is a trick question in that there IS no correct answer.

Now, if you assume that addition is the missing operations are addition, the answer is indeed 12, and I've seen that kind of notation in elementary school.

jmyrle....your guess/answer of 12 is the most logical.  Much closer than my answer (1)

No wonder 9 of 10 people didn't get it.
