The reason the casualties at UTAH BEACH were so light was because the 4th ID [including my Pop] landed over a mile to a mile and a half from where they were supposed to. And where a German infantry division was waiting...

Okinawa was the biggest amphibian battle of WWII. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Okinawa

In 82 days of battle, the Allies lost over 14,000 dead, and over 65,000 injured, of which my father was one.

It is said that the losses in this battle, convinced Truman to end the war with our nukes. It worked.
