Main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) deputy candidate Elif Doğan Türkmen was wounded in an armed attack at around 9 a.m. on May 26 in a restaurant in the southern Turkish province of Adana, Doğan News Agency has reported.

Türkmen, who is running for parliament on the CHP ticket as the party’s first candidate from Adana, was injured in the knee after gunshots were fired while she was on her way to a breakfast event, Adana Gov. Mustafa Büyük said, according to state-run Anadolu Agency.

Türkmen was hospitalized with not life-threatening injuries, Büyük said. Police have launched an investigation into the incident.

The vehicle used in the assault was found abandoned and was identified as a rental car, Büyük said, adding that the assailants were being sought.

Main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) leader Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu urged his party to remain calm, while also calling on the government to bring the perpetrators to justice.
