Coast Guard to Dedicate Mural to Vietnam War Pilots

 The Record-Eagle, Traverse City, Mich. | May 12, 2015

TRAVERSE CITY -- The Coast Guard Air Station Traverse City will dedicate a mural in honor of the Coast Guard's Vietnam Combat Search and Rescue pilots.

The mural, to be dedicated in a ceremony Wednesday, is part of the National Vietnam War Commemoration program to memorialize the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War, according to a Coast Guard press release.

The mural, at 6 feet tall and 8 feet wide, shows a timeline of the pilots during the war and was designed by pilot at the air station, Lt. Dan Schrader, the release said.

One of the Coast Guard's aviators from that era, retired Cmdr. Robert "Bobby" Long, will speak at the event. Long served in Vietnam from 1972 to 1973 and served at Air Station Traverse City from 1975 to 1978.

The dedication is at 10 a.m. on Wednesday at the Coast Guard Air Station, 1175 Airport Access Road.
