Well it may be small, but it includes the Germanic* tribes, Vikings** and Celts. Together they developed one of the leading powers of Europe, and modern government by the people.

In turn Britain's greatest offspring is the United States, which took the self-government idea further, and replaced Britain as the most powerful nation of all.

*  Angles, Saxons, Jutes and Frisians. Throw in Franks, Belgians.
** Principally Danes and Normans.
