Malaysia Arrests 12 Islamic State Terrorists

Police in Malaysia say they have arrested 12 Islamic State militants who were planning terrorist attacks in the capital Kuala Lumpur.

The attacks were planned a week before the 10-nation summit of the Association of South Asian Nations (ASEAN) which meets in Kuala Lumpur on today.

National police chief Khalid Abu Bakar said in a statement that police had seized 20kg of ammonium nitrate, and 20kg potassium nitrate, both fertilizers used in explosives, along with two litres of kerosene and remote-control devices.

He told reporters “They had planned to launch attacks in Malaysia on April 25 and April 26.”

Although the ASEAN summit is next week, Bakar said that attacks were planned on “strategic targets and governmental interests around the Klang Valley.”

The plot was reportedly in revenge for earlier arrests of militants by the Malaysian authorities.

At the beginning of April Malaysian authorities arrested 17 suspected Islamist militants.

Political Islamism has been on the rise in Malaysia.

In March 2015 the country's Kelantan state voted to implement the hudud punishments of sharia law, which include stoning, and amputation. A bill to introduce hudud at a national level is being considered.

In response the Islamist group Hizb-ut-Tahrir, which seeks to establish a globabl Islamic Caliphate, categorically rejected the use of the democratic process to estalish shariaand demanded its immediate implementation.
