Coast Guard Rescues Oil Tanker Crewman

Houston Chronicle | Apr 23, 2015 | by Mike Glenn

The Coast Guard rescued a crewman with medical problems from an oil tanker anchored off Galveston, authorities said.

The captain of the Jupiter Ace called officials at Coast Guard Sector Houston-Galveston about 3 p.m. Wednesday, telling them a member of the ship's crew was coughing up blood.

A boat crew from the Coast Guard station in Galveston along with two local paramedics went to the 580-foot ship to pick up the unidentified patient. Although it isn't standard practice for civilian paramedics to accompany a Coast Guard crew in such a mission, officials said the nature of the 46-year-old man's medical problems warranted the decision to include them.

The man was taken from the oil tanker to the 45-foot Coast Guard response boat and brought to the Galveston station. He was stable when an ambulance brought him to the University of Texas Medical Branch for treatment.

Coast Guard officials didn't know why the man was coughing up blood.
