EU leaders urged to act after migrant boat disaster
« on: April 20, 2015, 06:07:51 am »
Search and rescue efforts are continuing after a boat carrying an estimated 700 migrants capsized off the coast of Libya in the Mediterranean Sea, prompting a major search operation.

Italy's Prime Minister joined humanitarian groups in calling on European leaders to take action after a string of similar tragedies in recent months, claiming his country was often left to act alone to deal with the crisis.

This of course begs the question - why?

They are not our citizens, they have no claim on any European country other than common decency.

Italy does get stuck with the lions share of dealing with the problem. Maybe they should take a leaf out of Spain and Morocco's co-operative playbook - migrants who try to cross there are stopped by the Spanish, returned to Morocco where the government throws them out (financially aided by Spain), and the people smugglers boats are destroyed and their crews arrested, convicted, and held in a Moroccan prison. It works rather well.
