Spent much of my youth living in a nondescript town, midway between Nixon's Yorba Linda birthplace, and his Whittier college days.
There was a Nixon's market in Whittier, and a Nixon's restaurant in La Habra, for instance. And Nixon's first law office was also in La Habra.
My family had already left those areas, before Nixon was elected President. They had moved to San Clemente, not knowing he would soon pick that for his West Coast digs.
My father was involved with building a nice new neighborhood. When they learned Nixon was coming to San Clemente, they renamed the neighborhood "Presidential Heights." When Nixon later became disgraced, they changed the name again.
Before Nixon came to San Clemente, there were great places near his house, to park and walk to surfing beaches. Once he got there, they gated them off, and it became difficult to get to some great waves.
