Undersecretary of Higher Education Efrén Rojas Dávila said the Public Education Secretariat (SEP) is working hard to find better alternatives for the “dreamers” who are young students taken to the United States by their parents when they were infants.

The SEP will protect the rights of children, no matter where they live, as part of their constant effort to safeguard human rights, Rojas said.

Rojas inaugurated an International Seminar on Dreamers and minors in the United States from Mexico in Mexico City. During the ceremony he asked the organizers to share their findings with the secretariat.

He ensured that education will receive the necessary attention to continue to improve. He also spoke with the youth who, for one reason or another, were taken to the United States by their family.

The young students told the government official about their experiences, problems as they struggle for their education, their life separated from their families, difficulties adapting and cultural identification.

“You are full of desire. You’re capable of facing and overcoming challenges. Someone said that you’re going to make history and I told them, you are making history,” Rojas said.

He said that the topic of the seminar is of great importance to President Enrique Peña Nieto’s administration.

He thanked the youths for sharing their spirit and for participating in the event, which had a mission to promote understanding and cooperation.

Fourteen “dreamers” and their parents, civil association representatives and cultural functionaries attended the event.
